This post will give you some tips on how to make the most of your studies in NOUN. Obscurity is one thing that is common among the students of NOUN this is because of the way the school is run. Structurally, NOUN is geared towards the working class. Even though young people are trooping in lately the structure has not changed. At a point, a student may become miserable on how to go about his/her studies probably because of inadequacy from the management or personal challenges in the area of performance or finance. This usually surfaces mostly between 200 and 300 levels.
This article will do you good you ever find yourself in a confused state as you journey through your first degree in NOUN
EMBRACE THE INSTITUTION
One of the mistakes most students make is that they never embrace the institution. They only see it as an avenue to earn a degree or an alternative that they have no other choice but to accept and as such within a short time they become disinterested in their academic pursuit which eventually leads to poor performance. Once poor performance sets in, contemplation of dropping out is next. Remember the secondary school days, once you hate a teacher you can hardly pass his/her subject. It is the same everywhere. To succeed in any place you must be part of that place and make that place part of yourself. By so doing you begin to see the challenges that accompanied your academic pursuit as stepping stones other than obstacles.
DO AWAY WITH CERTIFICATE ORIENTATION
I think this is one of the major problems we now have among Nigerian students in this 21st century. This generation only wants to reap where they did not sow. Students now go about chasing after certificates instead of knowledge. We now have graduates that cannot write a common application letter for a job placement some even hide their certificates because they cannot defend them.
To excel in NOUN you must avoid this act. Your priority as a student should be continuous seeking for knowledge which will not only enhance your intellect but also boost your confidence to face your academic challenges. You don’t need to be told that your hunger for knowledge will definitely boost your academic performances which will eventually earn you a good certificate. And at the end of your studies, you will be very sound both in the certificate and intellectual wise unlike having a certificate without knowing anything.
I keep telling people that NOUN is not for lazy students and to make it through one must imbibe the habit of effective reading. In conventional universities, a student can bribe his/her way out but such a thing does not exist in NOUN, you must work very hard to earn your degree here. You must mark out quality time to study your course materials extensively. Be sincere to yourself by acknowledging that there is no other route to academic success other than reading your books and as such you must devote quality time in studying while reducing the amount of time you spend on social sites.
ALWAYS CONSULT “THE GOOD STUDY GUIDE”
Just as its name depicts you need this book as you journey through your academic career in NOUN. See the book as your academic companion. I really don’t know the reason the management included this book as part of courses that tend to make students disregard or neglect it after passing its exam in their 100 level first semester. A book that was purposely written for ODL students with the aim of guiding them through their studies. ALWAYS INCLUDE IT IN YOUR READING TIMETABLE EVERY SEMESTER until you are through.
If at any point in time you face financial constraint and could not beat the deadline of portal closure do not see it as the end. All you need do is to skip such a semester and continue in the following one. But while skipping do not deviate from studentry by neglecting your studies all because you will not be writing exams in that semester. What you should do is to download the courses you were supposed to register in that semester from NOUNe-coursewareand continue reading ahead. NOUN is not cheap in terms of cost. Among other things that are attributed to NOUN which include flexibility, accessibility, affordability, etc. I take exception to her affordability. NOUN is not that affordable a school in which you have to pay virtually for everything you do. Even for stamping of your exam slip.
