Post Graduate Diploma (P.G.D) in a Nutshell
Few things to know as regards Post Graduate Diploma (P.G.D)
Many students get discouraged when they discovered they must go through P.G.D. when proceeding for their Master’s degrees. This limitation may be on the premise of switching of faculty i.e a science student wanting to do a course at Management science faculty or failure to meet the required degree grade set by the institution.
This post is aimed at throwing more light on the importance of P.G.D.
What is Post Graduate Diploma (P.G.D)?
In this post, I am going to define P.G.D. in my own words and in simple terms. I will refer to it as an academic bridge between graduate and master’s degrees among some disciplines either in the area of switching of faculty or making up for a deficiency. The word “some” is employed here because not every faculty can accept other faculties. Science, for instance, cannot accept any student not coming from a science-related course in his or her first degree.
Importance of Post Graduate Diploma (P.G.D)
Though the P.G.D. can elevate academic qualification that is not the primary purpose of its usage.
One of its importance is that it creates room for students that may want to explore disciplines other than their initial faculties. It serves as an introductory background for these students before embarking on their master’s degree by intimating then with unfamiliar courses thereby making their academic journey easier later on.
For instance, a B.Sc. Biology holder may find it overwhelming if he or she puts in for Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) without going through a post-graduate diploma in M.B.A. first. This is because it is believed, based on the Nigerian secondary school curriculum, that he or she had no prior accounting-related background and as such, he or she may not be able to cope because master’s degrees have no introductory courses in any discipline.
Post Graduate Diploma also makes it possible for students who graduated with a low grade in their graduate degrees to continue their education. It serves as a leap for those students who could not meet the grade set for master’s degrees in their respective departments.
A student who graduated with a pass in his or her first degree will definitely have to do a P.G.D. in order to proceed for master’s either within or outside his or her department or faculty because no master’s degree accepts anything less than 2nd class lower or at least 3rd class in rare cases.
It is on this premise that P.G.D. becomes imperative in order not to halt a student’s academic pursuit based solely on a poor performance which is definitely unfair. Post Graduate Diploma, therefore, serves as a fair alternative for serious students that fall in this category.
P.G.D. also provides opportunities for “major” students that want to pursue a career in teaching. Let say you study English (major) in your first degree and intend to teach or you have secured a teaching job. You have to do a P.G.D. in education in order for you to be fully absorbed in the educational community. You have to be trained as a teacher before you are seen as one. P.G.D. have you covered in this regard.
The reason many students see Post Graduate Diploma as a barrier rather than a route is that in Nigeria, most of us do not study for knowledge but for the elevation of qualifications. No wonder most of us buy our ways through. And it is very imperative that we start to change our ways as regards education because it has less to do with the accumulation of credentials and much more to do with knowledge. And one thing I have come to understand is that knowledge reshapes attitude and by extension, the society.
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has many P.G.D. programmes in various faculties. No matter the faculties you are coming from there is definitely something for you and it last for just 18 months (three semesters).
